Sustainability is at our core
Maiyo is continuously trying to grow and evolve on it’s sustainability and impact on the environment. Here is a little insight into our thoughts and process.
Our main material use is organic cotton and nylon. Our cotton is made in Japan with a blend of hemp and 100% organic cotton. These yarns are GRS-approved and are created with zero chemicals and fairly paid farmers. Our nylon is ethically produced with reduced carbon emissions and naturally cooling fibres and therefore excess water is not necessary. All our hardware is handmade with water resistant materials and sensitive to skin.
We'll continue to source organic fabrics for all of our pieces, and hope we can grow into using recycled materials as our mission to increase the sustainability of our fabric as we grow.
Our products are made in a beach town in Vietnam. We keep fabric purchases to an absolute minimum while using up as much fabric as possible. If any excess material is left over from a production run, it is saved for the next collection, this is why a lot of colour ways are redone per collection.
Fabrics and extra parts are sourced locally to the factory, which helps to reduce our carbon footprint.
We minimise excess stock as much as possible, but, if we are left with any unsold items we either donate to charity or use the materials for future collections.
We work on small production runs with a certified supplier in Vietnam. Most of our interaction is done via the phone/computer to avoid long-haul flight travel.
Our factory follows the Ethical Trading Initiative, ensuring all social and environmental standards are met.
The employees are 90% female, with creative skills in pattern cutting and hand woven crocheting. All employees are all paid at least the regional living wage, and higher, depending on skill set.
Our swimwear arrives to the customer with hygiene strips and inside a polybag, these are all biodegrabale and should always be recycled by the customer. Our clothing arrives in a drawstring canvas bags which is made from 100% recycled material canvas and the logo is printed on with soya base ink. Our tissue paper that is inserted inside our box is printed using soya based ink and using recycled paper. The boxes are 75% recycled materials and we ask our customers to recycle these.
